Energy and climate policy

Global challenge

The protection of the environment and climate is one of the major global challenges of the 21st century and is a top priority in Germany. The country is an international pioneer in climate protection and in the development of renewable energies.

In 2011, Germany was the first industrial nation to decide to phase out nuclear energy. The country also plays an active global role in environmental protection and climate-friendly development strategies.

Germany has been pursuing the sustainable integration of climate and environmental protection for many years. A key factor is the increase in energy and resource efficiency as well as the development of regenerative energies and renewable raw materials.

Regional climate protection

Climate change and its consequences are not just a global problem. Baden-Württemberg has also been affected by it for some time now. This is why the state took early steps to investigate climate change and its effects. The state government stipulated in the coalition agreement that it would realign its energy and climate policy.

This requires a restructuring of the industrial society with a reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 of approximately 90% compared to 1990. The key element for this realignment is the climate protection act, in which the greenhouse gas reduction targets are specified. Baden-Württemberg is currently drawing up its climate protection act.
