demographic change work

The shortfall in skilled workers in Germany will continue to increase in the future because of demographic developments. There will also be an increased requirement for engineers due to economic growth and a structural change towards a research- and knowledge-intensive society.

The nationwide shortfall in engineers reached a record level of 87,000 in February 2012. Baden-Württemberg is already experiencing the shortage of skilled workers at the moment. Capacities are already stretched to the limits. New paths and directions need to be adopted to avoid any loss of added value.

The shortfall in engineers has serious implications for the companies involved. It can lead to delays in production or in the development of new products. This is also often recorded in the loss of orders through to the company parts affected by the shortage of skilled workers being relocated abroad. Today the engineering vacancies that have not been adequately filled are already leading to a loss of added value for the German economy.
