Global player and small and medium-sized companies

Companies and industries

Alongside the major international companies in the automotive, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or chemical industries, the approximately 3.5 million small and medium-sized companies constitute the backbone of the German economy. These include, in particular, the manufacturing sector in mechanical engineering and vehicle construction, their suppliers and the service sector, but also the growing future-centric industries of biotechnology and nanotechnology.

A strong basis with small and medium-sized companies

In Germany around 90 per cent of all companies are small and medium-sized companies. Companies with an annual turnover of under € 50 million and less than 500 employees are considered small or medium-sized companies. Around two thirds of all employees are employed in small and medium-sized companies. They also provide the vast majority of apprenticeship positions for young people.

The majority of small and medium-sized companies have been handed down from generation to generation and are owner-managed. Almost a third of each of these family companies is now run by a woman. An international focus, a high degree of specialisation and the ability to respond quickly are the strengths of small and medium-sized companies. These qualities make many German companies world leaders in their field.
