Multifaceted higher education system

Diversity and quality

No other state offers such a variety of universities as in Baden-Württemberg. Teaching and research is a high quality at nine universities, 23 colleges and eight dual universities. With Heidelberg, Constance and Tübingen, three of the eleven elite universities in Germany are in Baden-Württemberg.

Private universities play a less significant role in comparison to other countries: Around 90% of students attend public institutions. They are State-controlled and are open to anyone who has attained a general qualification for university entrance (Abitur) or a comparable qualification and is therefore eligible to study.

Special features when choosing a course of study

German universities offer students a wide variety of study options in virtually all subject areas. The range of subjects extends from history, cultural studies and medicine to business management. The technical universities (TU) focus on engineering and scientific courses. They are particularly popular with foreign students and have a good reputation as the melting point of German engineering skills.

38% of all students attend a university of applied sciences or a dual university in Baden-Württemberg. Students are attracted to these universities primarily because they provide a faster track into a profession and also offer practice-orientated courses. Almost the same number of young women as men work in Baden-Württemberg.
